Mary Jemison
The name of this book is Indian Captive, by Lois Lenski. Most of the story takes place at the Genesee River which is now western New York. The main characters are Mary Jemison and a Seneca Indian named Turkey Feather.
Mary Jemison lived on a farm with her family in eastern Pennsylvania until April 6, 1758 when she was taken away from her family by the Seneca Indians. They took her to southern Ohio and then to the Genesee River to live with them. Mary was very scared on this long journey with the Indians. Poor Mary did not understand them and had a very hard time with them, but she soon came to understand them and made friends.

Saturday I went to YMCA. There was rock-climbing and zip lining so I decided to do it. When I got to the top I asked the man how many feet tall it was and he said 40 feet tall. That did not make me feel too secure. I went down anyway. I screamed my head off the whole way down. After wards I was happy because I conquered my fear. I had a great time! We all went home and ate dinner and went to bed.

This week I have been going to VBS. It is so much fun we do singing, dancing, arts and crafts, recreation, and we get popsicles at outside time. We have practiced singing and dancing five songs and tonight we are going to perform them! I am excited and a little nervous, but it is going to be fun. We will get our arts and crafts back tonight. We go to Mrs. Sandy’s it is so fun. We get skittles and here a story about God. Yesterday we learned about how God died on the cross for all of us because he loves us. There were thorns around his head and nails in his hands and feet and he died. A man wrapped him up in cloth and laid him in a cave. He rolled a stone in front of the cave where the entrance was so no one could take the body. Three days later the stone was rolled back and Jesus’s body was gone and the cloth was folded up! He had risen! I thought that was an amazing story. And I thought that was very, very nice of Jesus to die for us so we can ask God to forgive us and we will be forgiven. Tonight is going to be a very fun night! And that is just why I love VBS so much!

Today is Halloween! I am eight years old. Today is October 31,2011. I am so excited! I am going to be a Spanish dancer! I love Halloween! I think my favorite part is probably wearing my costume. Why dressing up is my favorite thing to do on Halloween is because you get to pretend to be someone else. We are going to go to my church. They have big blow up stuff. I like the slides!

Earlier this week, the teacher sent a new book home for Grace to learn called The Birthday Car for advanced reading test purposes. Dad sat down that night to read it with Grace for the first time. After about the third page, mom spoke up and suggested that she could probably read it herself. So he started back at the beginning and asked Grace to try to read it. Of course mom was right! Grace read the entire book (first time she had seen it mind you) and struggled with maybe five words but was able to sound them out. By the second read, she new the whole book and was able to tell you the story in her own words.
